Forms of prevention:

  • Change the lifestyle or eating habits.
  • Avoid things that are known to cause cancer.
  • Take medicines to treat a precancerous condition or to prevent cancer from starting.

Risk factor’s:

  • Prostate cancer is rare in men under 50 years of age. The probability of developing prostate cancer increases with the age of men.
  • Family history of prostate cancer. A man whose father, brother or son has had prostate cancer is at a higher than average risk for this cancer.
  • Prostate cancer occurs more frequently in African-American men than in white men. African-American men with prostate cancer are more likely to die from this disease than white men.
  • The prostate needs male hormones to function correctly. The main male sex hormone is testosterone. This helps the body to develop and maintain male sexual characteristics. An enzyme in the body converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is important for normal growth of the prostate, but it can also make the prostate grow larger and play a role in the progression of prostate cancer.

The following protective factors may decrease the risk of prostate cancer:

Folate is a type of vitamin B that is naturally contained in some foods, such as vegetables, beans, and orange juice. Folic acid is a form of folate produced by man that is found in vitamin supplements and fortified foods, such as breads and whole grains.

Finasteride and dutasteride. They are medicines that are used to decrease the amount of male sex hormones made by the body. These drugs impede the action of the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
